I guess this could be a post continued about the big changes. Or not. The fact is, time and money are short and the heat is long. One thing about homesteading is that you MUST keep it moving along to suit your own family's needs. There is no set answer. First you pray, then you plan, then you pray more.
I have no need for 12 good production hens, 6 meat hens....and a handful of roosters. So I sold them. They are making a family on 5+ acres very happy.
I have a pen of bantams.....and they are happy. We get the eggs we need for us, and that makes the budget happy, I have a little group of hobby chickens that makes me happy, and I fix Bob eggs on the weekends that makes him happy. WIN-WIN over and over again!
There are some odd chicks in the bantam pen....but that's for another day.

I need to get rid of a few chickens, mainly roosters :/ I really wanted to sell eggs but I have ended up with soo many bantys noone wants the small eggs except us. I might start selling some of those girls. They are broody again anyways!!!!!
Those roosters make a fine stock. A half dozen roosters can turn into 8 quarts of chicken stock.
Of all the chicks I bought this spring (not counting the cornish x) it appears I have wound up with five roosters and five hens in all. Not what I wanted. Oh, well, guess my freezers will be full of chicken soon. My husband and I look at the birds though and have a hard time deciding which roosters to keep. They're so pretty.
I must have angels covering my back door this year. I went nuts... from 15 to 25. But I went to our Co-Op, instead of going to any individual. And I know they went through one of the major hatcheries, because they were flown in. Out of 10 Rhode Island Reds and 15 Americaunas, I'm finding only 2 Roos.
