Our heritage turkeys had a bit of a setback this year, we are down to a single adult pair plus several juvenile poults. Because of this we won't be using any of them for meat, but keeping all of them as replacement breeding stock. This left us with the decision to order broad breasted turkeys from the hatchery for meat, or to do without. Since I love having a home raised turkey for Thanksgiving....and since the hatchery had a fantastic sale on turkeys....we now are brooding 30 of the little tasty peepers.
They arrived yesterday afternoon and will spend a few days in a brooder in the house to be sure they are eating well and on their feet. From there they will be moved to an outdoor brooder pen until they are ready to go into the movable pen.
If all goes well we should have plenty of turkey in the freezer in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas!
